The bartender says, “We have a drink named after you.” The grasshopper asks, “Why do you have a drink named Stanley?”
…A classic bar joke and a classic after-dinner cocktail.
The Grasshopper was created around 1919 at Tujague’s in the New Orleans’ French Quarter. Equal portions of Bols Crème de Cacao, Bols Crème de Menthe, and heavy cream create a sinfully sweet, low-proof cocktail that was very popular during cocktail parties of the 1950s and 1960s.
The cocktail is enjoying a renaissance and showing up on cocktail menus around the country, but you should go to the original source, Tujague’s, where they still make hundreds of these cocktails every week.
